Mastermundo 09

Mastermundo 09 – 26 September, The Hague

Succesful record attempt!

The 2009 edition of Mastermundo ended up in a record breaking event. At 10.30pm 4,971 people joined the ‘Vocal Domino Record Attempt’ at the Spuiplein in the city center of The Hague. The TodaysArt festival audience let love win from hate. The project was a result of a buzzing edition of Mastermundo where all participants together created this unique event, ‘conducted’ by the inspiring Itay Talgam.

Experience counts.
My background in design, business, social sciences, and technology has prepared me to work with companies to become more successful innovators. Methods and design thinking can be used strategically and manifest themselves in companies by creating organic growth through flexible process, an open culture, and more compelling products and services.
Companies and clients with whom I have worked include:
Allstate, Amazon.com, Citidel Group, Four Points Digital, Hyatt, JAM Productions, John Deere, KBA Marketing, MCI, Microsoft, Navigant Consulting, Platinum Technologies, Phillip Morris, Miller Brewing, RadioWave, RollingStone, SAP, SPIN, Unilever, Universal Music Group, Yahoo!, among others.

Two major institutions, thousands of pages read and written, dozens of relevant projects.
Undergrad degrees in Anthropology and Psychology from the University of Chicago got me started and a Masters of Design from the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Institute of Design rounded out my thinking. Read what BusinessWeek thinks about the ID here: Tomorrow’s B-School? It might be a D-School. I have also taken a sampling of courses at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine and at IIT’s Stuart Graduate School of Business.

Currently I work as a freelance photography project manager and editor-advisor for photographers, advising on portfolio presentations, book editing, project creation.

After cooperating for 2 years on the award winning project Things As They Are – Photojournalism in Context (publication and exhibition in Amsterdam, Tokyo, Paris, and Seoul) with Christian Caujolle I joined Agence VU’ in 2007. Besides recruiting new photographers, my main responsibility was the cultural activities of the agency’s photographers. These included numerous portfolio reviews at festivals and other events, workshops for photographers, and the production of books and exhibitions. Selected exhibitions: European Works, Cité de l’Architecture, Paris 2008, Munem Wasif Water Salinity / Prix Pictet Commission, Mall Galleries London 2009, MediaVU’ exhibition, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2009.

I started at World Press Photo as Project Manager Exhibitions, organizing 20 annual exhibitions worldwide, per year. I introduced a new exhibition system in 2002, which is still being used by the Foundation for its annual show. The system was nominated for the Dutch Design Awards in 2003.

I cooperated in the digitization of the World Press Photo competition, being responsible for the quality of the projections, and the infrastructure for handling the entries to the competition.

After moving to the position of Head of the Department, I was responsible for overall planning of the exhibitions schedule, financially and logistically.

In the same capacity I continued traveling with the annual exhibition and was responsible for the creation of the 50th anniversary exhibition Things As They Are, photojournalism in context since 1955, that traveled to Amsterdam, Tokyo, Seoul and Paris between 2005 and 2007. The accompanying publication received several awards, including the ICP Infinity Award for Best Photography Book of 2005.

PRESENT
Creative director at Lowe/Draftfcb Amsterdam. An integrated marketing communications agency. Which means it utilizes and combines all available communication channels (old and new) to reach and engage consumers. The agency is a collective of closely cooperating experts in the fields of advertising, digital, direct, guerrilla, sales promotion, retail and data. At the moment about 80 people work at the Amsterdam office.
Besides my work at the agency I speak on matters of brand interaction and ‘open branding’ and organize creative social events like Upload Cinema to keep my friends and myself busy.

PAST
I studied art at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, worked as visual artist and creative entrepreneur – was co-founder of the Supper Club Amsterdam – before joining Saatchi and Saatchi The Netherlands in 1995 as art director. I’ve been creative director of Saatchi interactive (1996), Lintas interactive (1998), Ozlo (2000), Lowe Live (2002) and Draft (2004) before becoming creative director of Draftfcb in 2006. I was board member of the Art directors Club Netherlands (1999-2004) and guest teacher interaction design at the Rietveld Academy (2007)

FUTURE
As an artist converted to advertising, I’ve experienced the best and most valuable ideas are developed when artists, technologists and business people work together. Its sounds simple, but its not. Because they usually don’t speak each other’s language. I’ve learned to speak all those languages (a bit). I’m looking forward meeting and working with other enterprising multi-linguists. In Amsterdam or any other part of the world.

Specialties
Creative ideas, brand interaction strategy and concepts, integration of above the line, below the line and online, building bridges between art, technology and business

Over the years I’ve developed a profound interest in social innovation, creativity and leadership. How can we learn to see through different perspectives at ourselves and the world around us? How can we create and innovate from a more holistic and integrated space? I live and work from the philosophy that; “innovation and creation is about surrendering, surrendering to your deeper will and surrendering to what wants to shape itself through you, you just have to get yourself out of the way!”

So many of today’s challenges and problems are being dealt with from the same perspective and thinking that created the challenges in the first place. Fragmented, analytic thinking disconnected from heart and body – personal disconnection – social disconnection and environmental disconnection. Lately I’ve been working with people to (re)learn to (re)focus on, give room to and support themselves and others (yes human beings) to stay connected as they develop new innovative products, systems and ideas. Helping us to remember that connecting to ourselves and connecting to others is fundamental if we want to ‘create’ live affirming solutions, products, actions and systems that are integrated and supportive to our greater environment.
