Talk abstract:

Design isn't about you (the Designer)

What makes a design(er) great? Where do ideas come from? How do art and design relate? Why has Design never been more important?

We are all in love with our own ideas and this is especially so for designers. We want to change the world; we desire to make it beautiful and orderly; we idolize design stars and pine for the objects they create (that unfortunately almost no one uses). In fact, the best designs and designers are those who fluidly create solutions which match the context of a problem and don't just reflect inspiration, intuition, or opinion. It's time to step away from your computer, travel out of your studio, and extend your skill set beyond the discipline of design.

In this talk, Zachary will introduce a new perspective on the definition of 'design' and the Balanced Breakthrough Model for product and service development. This simple but useful model acts as both a heuristic and a generator allowing designers to achieve a 'balanced' perspective on their work before they start designing. By understanding the people who relate to a problem, the dynamics of a competitive market, and key trends in relevant technology, we can design solutions which transform people's lives and reflect a more fundamental (if not always aesthetic) elegance.
